Campers eat in a "real-life" setting where they are allowed to make choices guided by our nutrition staff so they learn first hand what portion sizes look like and how to create a balanced satisfying meal out of the foods they love and know. We offer everything from waffles to pizza to chicken fajitas and barbeque. There is always fresh fruit and a full salad bar at lunch and dinner. Even the pickiest of eaters will be able to find something delicious and nutritious. Campers are able to see first hand that weight loss can involve the foods they love in moderation.
The nutrition education continues in classes where the campers learn in a variety of manners about not only scientific principles but practical application of nutritional information.
In class we cover:
- Food composition: understanding proteins, carbohydrates and fats
- Meal planning and the importance of portion control
- How to make healthy selections when dinning out, at school, or in the home
- How to read product labels
- How to understand and address hunger cues and cravings
- Food preparation: introducing new foods and how to make healthy alternatives to their favorites
- The role of fitness and movement
In addition, we explore the ways in which lifestyle is a contributing factor to success. Goal-setting exercises help solidify what they are learning. We look at the relationship between food and mood and offer them the support they need to make permanent lasting change.
To help facilitate their growth and maintain their progress we have developed an after camp program. Campers will receive a seasonal newsletter, access an online journal to report their progress, stay connected with the staff and receive personalized input and suggestions from a certified health counselor.
