Our Philosophy
Camp Kingsmont is all about developing self confidence.
We find that over the summer self confidence grows dramatically as weight begins to drop off and
campers accomplish things they never thought possible. Self confidence at Camp Kingsmont flourishes
in our campers not only as the result of weight loss but also from the development of sports skills,
the enhancement of self image and self expression, from the many new friends and from participation in our
leadership activities.
Our Goal & Our Focus
Our goal is to provide the tools kids and teens need to make
fundamental changes in the way they live – a change that will last for the rest of
their lives. These tools we provide include a first-class staff, superior accommodations, and well-developed
programs aimed at shedding the excess pounds and keeping them off. We help make the changes necessary
for long term weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. Our programs are built around proper nutrition and nutrition
education, an introduction to a wide variety of physical activities, non-competitive team sports and
age appropriate group discussions about emotional issues facing today’s youth.
Not only will each camper make great friends during the summer, but they will also develop self-respect
and gain confidence. The friends made during the summer can provide needed support when campers return
to their homes and schools. Campers' newfound confidence often becomes the springboard for participation
in extracurricular sports and activities in their home communities.
We do not preach, lecture or nag. Everyone has heard it all before.
Our focus is to provide solid, useful information in a non-threatening
environment that will allow each camper to experience real, positive changes. Every camper
will lose weight--but more importantly, he or she will learn how to continue a healthy lifestyle and keep the weight off. We are not
a ‘fat’ camp that starves off pounds running campers ragged and feeding them gruel. Fat camps are just a
temporary fix. While diets may work in the short run, long term weight management demands a level
of knowledge and commitment that campers will gain at Camp Kingsmont.
Activities, Sports, & Training
Our campers enjoy creative and fun-filled activities. Our evening
activities include weekly ‘themed’ dances in the Red Barn, open air dances,
camp fires, scavenger hunts, movies, skits and games. In 2009 we are
pleased to introduce the ‘Main Event’ to be featured each Friday evening.
At least once a week we have rec/pool night to take advantage of the
Hampshire College pool and other indoor recreational facilities. Dodge
ball, basketball, ping pong, billiards and other indoor activities are
available.
We provide instruction for
all skill levels in a wide variety of sports, including street
hockey, rugby, football, baseball, soccer, field hockey, volleyball,
basketball, mountain biking and water polo--just to name a few.
Instruction in weight and strength training is available to interested campers. Personal
trainers work with campers to create individualized workout regimes.
Meals & Snacks
Our campers enjoy three meals every day, plus two snacks. These meals are
designed by our nutritionists and served by the dining hall staff at
Hampshire College. Lunch and dinner include many favorite foods, such
as pizza and hamburgers, as well as unlimited salad and sandwich bars. Vegetarian
options are provided at every meal.
In order to insure that healthy eating habits continue once camp ends, campers attend weekly nutrition classes and practical
hands-on cooking classes to develop fundamental skills in the kitchen that they can use when they return home.
All-Camp Trips & Optional Trips
Every day at Camp Kingsmont is action-packed; but on some special days we take campers on off-campus trips.
Our all-camp trips include fireworks on the Fourth of July, trips to the
bowling alley, the skating rink and the movies, a full day at Six Flags New England
and a day of swimming in the lake at Chicopee State Park. Optional trips include white
water rafting at the Zoar Gap trips to the mall for new clothes to fit slimmed down bodies, horse back riding
lessons at Muddy Brook Farm and ‘tournament’ paintball.
A Supportive Environment
At Camp Kingsmont every camper will experience what it means to live healthily
in a supportive and fun environment. Campers will be exposed
to proper nutrition, nutrition education, cooking classes, a wide variety
of physical activities, non-competitive team sports, and our Expressions
and Connections programs aimed at building self esteem.
They will return home with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to continue an active
and healthy lifestyle. Our after care program offers weekly on-line nutrition
support, menu options and personal trainer advice. Weight management
requires a lifelong commitment to a healthier lifestyle – a lifestyle
that needs to be supported at home.
