When Sam Houghteling first came to Camp Kingsmont, he was a 13-year old camper with more than forty pounds to shed. Sam had undergone a leg lengthening procedure which had left him bedridden for over a year, with severely atrophied muscles. Worried about his ability to be active again, Sam read about Camp Kingsmont in the New York Times and convinced his parents to sign him aboard for four weeks. Sam made enormous progress his first summer, during which time he spent many hours rehabilitating his legs and changing his body. The camp experience gave Sam the confidence to continue training, and by the end of the 8th grade he was starting on his school’s baseball team. Each year Sam returned to camp his summer achievements were matched by his achievements at school. Further summers at Kingsmont lead to Sam becoming class President, a Princeton Peer Leader, and eventually one of the Captains of the Varsity Football team.
Sam completed his BA in Political Science at CUNY Brooklyn College. During his time in school, and since graduation, he has worked for a Congressman, in a historical archive, as a legal assistant, and as an intern for the Brooklyn Cyclones, the single-a affiliate of the NY Mets. He recently has been living in San Francisco, CA, and working for a national green energy non profit. Along with his years as a camper, Sam spent three years as a counselor at Camp Kingsmont, and was the Boys Hill Director of Camp Empire Lake for two summers. He looks forward to being a part of the Kingsmont family again, and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Urban Planning and Public Policy.
Lead Division Leader
Meghan has been a camper and staff member at Camp Kingsmont for 12 years. Meghan has served in a variety of staff positions from counselor to Assistant Camp Director. Meghan holds a degree in Sociology from George Mason University and a Masters in Elementary Education from Marymount University. She is now a full time elementary teacher in Fairfax County, VA. Meghan has also struggled with her weight for many years. She has endured the ridicule of her peers despite participating and at times starring on soccer, baseball, basketball, field hockey and track teams. The summers at Camp Kingsmont provided Meghan with a network of friends to support her weight challenges and provided a safe nonjudgmental environment to permit her to recharge for the upcoming school years. She will tell you that camp saved her life. Camp not only encouraged significant weight loss but provided nutritional education and caring support.
